Founder of Southland Christian Church Dies

Wayne Smith, The founder of Southland Christian Church, Lexington, has died at the age of 87. The church confirmed Smith’ demise occurred at his residence on Tuesday night in Sayre Christian Village. Southland Christian is Lexington’s largest church congregation. Smith founded Southland in 1956. The church has grown exponentially since then with campuses on Richmond Road and in Danville and Georgetown. The main campus remains on Harrodsburg Road in Jessamine County. He retired from Southland in 1996 after undergoing several major surgeries, but even in retirement he was still a very active member of the church and the community. Smith’s legacy is felt by people even beyond the scope of Lexington. He was born in Pennsylvania, grew up in Cincinnati and was a pastor in Grant and Harrison Counties before moving to Lexington. His funeral is set to take place Lexington by 1:00 p.m. The venue is the Southland location on Harrodsburg Road in the auditorium; Building E. Visitation will be held 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Tuesday, July 5 and 10:00 am – 1:00 pm on Wednesday.
